Ageing Well with Learning Disabilities Conference Workshops

Bild’s Ageing Well with Learning Disabilities Conference 2022 is pleased to announce our programme of online and in-person workshops, available to book when you register your place at the conference.

We are delighted to offer delegates choice of workshops, enabling you to choose topics that best align to your professional development interests.

The programme of practical workshops will be led by professionals working in the field and experts by experience, exploring best practice in supporting people throughout their lives.

Workshops include:

Activities to Age Well from Joanna Dwyer (Lewisham, Southwark and Lambeth Teams for Adults with Learning Disabilities). Acknowledging that as we grow older, we might change the types of activities that we do or change how we do activities that we’ve always done.

In the Annual Health Checks workshop, Krystal Hemmingway (Learning Disability & Autism Programme NHS England & NHS Improvement) and Sarah Swindells (Health and Wellbeing Lead at Dimensions UK) seek to promote access to and uptake of the annual health check.

“In my seventies – still autistic and it is still OK to be me” Ageing well with autism features Pamela Hirsch, expert by experience and Sue Hatton sharing Pamela’s insight and experiences. In the last twenty years Pamela has learnt much more about herself, what it means to be autistic and how that differs from the experience of more neurotypical people.

Raising awareness of falls prevention in adults with learning disabilities Sune Keyser (Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust) and Nicola Lidstone (Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust) will explore fall prevention for older adults with learning disabilities.

A workshop on Sepsis causes in older people with learning disabilities, led by Anne Hunt (Deputy Director of Nursing and Partnerships, Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust)

Victoria and Stuart Project – involving people in end of life care planning, with Professor Irene Tuffrey-Wijne of Kingston University.

The power of assistive technology for positive ageing from John Patterson (Hammersmith and Fulham Council) will include Safer Walking Technology, reminder and medication prompting devices, epilepsy monitoring and lifestyle monitoring systems.

James Ridley, Senior Lecturer at Edge Hill University, will offer the workshop SEE ME: a human rights based approach to reducing restrictive practices in older adults.

And Sarah Swindells of Dimensions will lead a workshop on Meeting people’s health needs as they grow older.

The Ageing Well with Learning Disabilities Conference, from Bild’s GOLD network, takes place on 30th September at the Birmingham and online. Featuring a range of fantastic keynote speakers in addition to our workshops, the event offers an opportunity to learn, discuss and debate best practice in supporting people with learning disabilities as they age.
