Once for Wales Positive Behaviour Support – new family resource available to empower families
Are you caring for a loved one with a learning disability? If so, our Once for Wales family Positive Behaviour Support resources might be of interest to you.
Co-produced by Bild, the All Wales Forum of Parents and Carers and families across Wales with lived experience, the resources have been designed to upskill and empower families who support individuals with a learning disability throughout their life span. The resource pack was commissioned and funded by Improvement Cymru, part of Public Health Wales and we are very grateful for their supportThe pack includes a range of downloadable fact sheets, videos sharing family perspectives, and a webinar.
The key topics include:
- Understanding Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
- Understanding behaviours of concern
- The role of families in the development of PBS plans
- What families matters to families, the right to a good life
- The role of siblings in PBS
- Key questions to ask professionals
The powerful videos show different families perspectives and experiences, including Michelle, a Mum to a 17-year-old boy with additional needs who was first diagnosed at two years of age. Michelle is joined by Doctor Saltmarsh, her son’s clinical psychologist to discuss their journey.
Gwyneth’s video includes her son, Iwan and discusses the importance of everyone being on the same page, including friends, family and professionals whilst Angie talks about her son who has behavioural challenges, joined by Luke, a behaviour specialist from Facing the Challenge.
Professor Edwin Jones, BILD PBS Strategic Lead said: “It’s been a privilege to be involved in producing the PBS resource pack to empower families and to co-produce this with such great partners. The families involved have had some very difficult experiences, and have overcome many obstacles, to provide the best support for their relatives.
“They want to share these with other families and empower them. The resources will be helpful – not only to families in Wales but for families across other parts of the UK – as well as being useful to professionals and others who work to support families.”
All resources are available in both Welsh and English.
