Human Rights and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Yesterday was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. To celebrate, The Scottish Commission for Learning Disability (SCLD) held a roundtable event to consider the benefits of direct incorporation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for people with a learning/intellectual disability.

At this event, SCLD heard from Sir Robert Martin and Rosemary Kayness from the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. They spoke passionately about why they think direct incorporation of the UNCRPD into Scottish law is needed, and how this can help to make human rights a reality for people with learning/ intellectual disabilities and all disabled people. You can watch the video here>

SCLD has written a position statement on why they think there is a need for direct incorporation of the UNCRPD in Scotland and are inviting organisations and individuals to join them in this shared ambition. You can read the statement here>

If you would like to sign this statement by SCLD and be involved in ongoing work in this area, find out more information about how to do this on the SCLD website>
